THR is reporting that Steven Spielberg dropped out of “American Sniper“. Bradley is currently attached to star.

Steven Spielberg will not direct American Sniper, the film adaptation of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle’s autobiography, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

In early May, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively broke the news that the Lincoln director’s next project would be American Sniper, which is set up at Warner Bros.

After Spielberg came on board, DreamWorks joined Warner Bros. to co-produce the film, written by Jason Hall (Spread). DreamWorks will drop out of co-producing now that Spielberg has moved on. A source confirmed that Spielberg’s vision for the film did not align with Warner Bros.’ planned budget.

Bradley Cooper is attached to star and has been developing the project as a producer.

The film is an adaptation of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle’s book American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History. It reveals how Kyle came to record the highest number of sniper kills for an American. The book has been praised for its frankness in telling a first-person account of a warrior who shoots from far and close distances.

Kyle was killed at a shooting range by a fellow veteran in February.

Deadline reported earlier this that Alec Baldwin is in talks to join Bradley, Rachel Mcadams, Emma Stone and Danny McBride for the untitled Cameron Crowe/Hawaii/Deep Tiki project. It has been reported that Baldwin will play “a military man who oversees satellite launch”.

When I saw him in Cannes while he and Jim Toback were unveiling their hilarious documentary Seduced And Abandoned, Alec Baldwin made it clear that any roles he takes in the near future would have to square with his commitment to being a new dad. His wife Hilaria was close by, looking adorably pregnant. It looks like the Cameron Crowe-directed untitled film for Sony fits that bill because I hear that Baldwin is negotiating. Crowe and producer Scott Rudin have been discreet about the movie, but it looks like Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams and Danny McBride are all part of it. Look for Baldwin to lock his role shortly.

Bradley, Rachel and Emma were all spotted doing, presumably, pre-production work in Honolulu last week. The production is expected to start in September.

Deadline reported earlier this year that Steven Spielberg is set to direct “American Sniper” with Bradley attached to star in the movie.

DreamWorks and Warner Bros will team on Steven Spielberg‘s next film American Sniper, with Bradley Cooper aboard to star in the autobiography of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. Cooper optioned the book himself, along with Andrew Lazar’s Mad Chance, and it has turned out to be quite a coup for the actor. Jason Hall (Paranoia) wrote the script and will executive produce, with Spielberg, Cooper, Lazar, and Peter Morgan producing. Kyle, an expert marksman who spread his love for weapons by teaching others how to shoot, was recently and tragically gunned down along with a pal by a fellow discharged vet they had taken to a Texas shooting range to deal with his post-traumatic stress disorder.

The film is based on the book American Sniper: The Autobiography Of The Most Lethal Sniper In U.S. Military History by Kyle, Scott McEwan and Jim DeFelice. The film chronicles Texas native Kyle’s journey from rodeo cowboy to SEAL Chief with the highest number of sniper kills in U.S. military history. The book spent 18 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and 13 weeks at No. 1. Cooper’s production company, 22nd & Indiana Pictures, optioned rights to the book a year ago with Lazar’s Mad Chance. Sheroum Kim overseeing for 22nd & Indiana and Jon Berg is overseeing for Warner Bros. DreamWorks’ Kristie Macosko Krieger and Adam Somner will produce for Spielberg. CAA and WME shared this big deal, with WME repping the book. Hall’s repped by CAA and Management 360
